Friday Funday: The Most Ridiculous Leggings Ever Made

Okay, let's walk through a thought experiment:

Picture the most ridiculous leggings you can possibly imagine.  Now make them a million times more ridiculous.

Got it?  Got that mental picture, friends?

I'm about to blow away your wildest imagination.

Ready?

Okay:

Let me break this down for you:  There is a bucking unicorn on one side. There is a robot T-rex on the other side, and he is shooting laser beams from his head.  All of this is happening on a backdrop of rainbows and galaxies.

If this is not the height of "IDGAF" then I don't know what is.  I saw some girl wearing these at a dance party the other week and she was crushing the whole scene.

So, I just thought you all needed to know that this exists.

Things I Love Buying in Thrift Stores, Part 1

Focus on the pin, friends, and pay no attention to the fact that I wore this blazer (sans pin) a few days ago...it's toooootally different now...

Two Irresistable Things

1.  Enormous glasses.  Gigantic, Carl-from-Pixar's-"Up" spectacles.  I lose all self control.
  That's why I love those Asian glasses websites, which allow me to buy 5+ pairs a year for less than $100.  The glasses below are from Warby Parker, though, and boy how I love them, too:

2.  Jumpsuits.  Creators/Highlighters of the FUPA.  Why do I love thee so, when you are arguably one of the worst inventions in clothing history?  Perhaps it's because you allow me to get away with putting on only one piece of clothing in the winter, when otherwise I would be forced to wear (shudder) TIGHTS.  Tights are always my last resort!  (I have hated since since I was a wee babe!  One of my earliest memories is my mom struggling to put me in a pair of white tights for temple.)

Three Things (including a Lendperk review)

1.  I would like to run a post about some Google reader alternatives.  I already told you guys a bit about Feedly, which I am using exclusively right now.  Would anyone be interested in contributing a bit of content to a compilation post about alternatives to run alongside other peoples' contributions?  Your piece can be as simple or complicated as you like; I'm just looking to cover as much ground as possible!  Email me if you're interested.

2.  I am wearing my jumpsuit today.  Heck yeah.

3.  Recently, Lendperk contacted me and asked me to write a review of their dress-rental service.  I was not paid for the review, but I did receive a free dress rental.  (And you can, too!)

Lendperk is a subscription service that calls itself the "Netflix of dresses."  Essentially, the way it works is you sign up for a monthly membership in which you pay either $20 for one dress rental a month, $34 for two a month, or $49 for unlimited monthly rentals.  If you don't use your monthly rentals, they can roll over.  Then when you're ready, you browse Lendperk's selection, pick a dress and a size, and it will be shipped to you.  You use it for your month and then send it back.  Like Rent the Runway (RtR) (referral link), you don't have to worry about dry cleaning.

Lendperk features dresses from mostly-accessible brands/retailers like J.Crew, Modcloth, Anthro, and ASOS.  Lendperk is still getting its feet off the ground, so the selection of dresses and sizes is somewhat limited right now.  (That said, I noticed several new dresses have been added in the last month, so it's nice that the collection is growing.)  The J.Crew dress I'd wanted to rent was unavailable, so I went with this one from Warehouse/ASOS:

The dress arrived in a soft mailer and included a return shipping envelope.  It took a couple of days to arrive.  I didn't find the dress wrinkly, but the soft mailer delivery could create some wrinkle problems with other fabrics:

Unfortunately, I can't show you what the dress looked like on me because the dress didn't fit!  I consulted the size chart before ordering (which helpfully includes brand-specific measurements) but the fit of this dress was way off for me.  Unlike RtR, which sends you dresses in several sizes just in case you have a fit issue, I had no alternative size of this dress and ended up just dejectedly sending it back.

Pros of Lendperk:  Variety of dresses, no need to worry about dry cleaning, WAY cheaper than RtR, many dresses include a page of helpful photos of live people wearing the dress (see, e.g., here).

Cons of Lendperk:  At least some dresses are sale purchases or past-season (see, e.g., this Anthro dress, which went on sale quite a while ago), limited selection, you are out of luck if you receive the wrong size dress, featured brands/dresses generally retail/go on sale for cheap enough that I could probably buy the ones I like for close to $50.

In sum:  I love the idea of Lendperk, and I hope it gets some kind of angel funding so that it can dramatically expand the size and current-ness of its selection.  It seems like its creator, Star Li, is a bit of an entrepreneur who has started businesses in the past, and it looks like she is developing this one to grow (and possibly be sold) as well.

As it stands now, I would probably not pay for this service unless there was a particular dress I really wanted for a random occasion and I knew I wouldn't wear the dress again after that occasion.  So, for example, let's say I was going to a garden party.  It might be worth it to get the $20 plan, rent this dress, and then cancel the plan afterwards:

Since you can cancel plans at any time, it looks like you can just pay for a plan when you feel like renting a dress and then have no further obligation to pay as long as you timely cancel.  I'd probably only do this with brands I already knew my size in, since you are a bit SOL if you end up with the wrong size.

That said, I'm generally pretty unenthusiastic about dress rental services.  I'd rather put my money towards the purchase of my own dresses that are versatile enough to wear in various contexts in my life over long periods of time instead of spending money renting a dress I don't get to keep or that I know I only want to wear once anyway.  Also, I don't particularly like seeing dresses I'd passed over in the Anthro sale section available for rent.  I would prefer to see new designs that are still full-price in stores.

(Even though I'm a member of RtR, I have yet to rent a single dress from them because HTF do you justify spending $65 --- at the low end --- on a dress that you have to give back??  That's what I spend on dresses I KEEP!  And I'm not brand-conscious enough to care if I'm wearing Harve Leger to an event or whatnot.  I suppose if I needed to go to a gala where a long dress was required perhaps I'd consider it, but even then I still think I'd rather sale shop.)

Anyway, if you'd like to try Lendperk for yourself, you can sign up for a 9 day free trial, which is good for one free dress rental.  I probably won't be using this service in the future since I'd rather develop my own closet, but I do think it's a great idea that could go far with the right investors.

I know I shouldn't be shopping like I have been this month (that's a whole 'nother post), but this bag was barely over $100 with extra discounts from Kate Spade it's it's so big and roomy, and yet so sleek-looking. Plus, it goes with almost everything and the patent leather cleans easily.

Darn you student loans, and darn you stupid big paycheck, tricking me into thinking all of that money is actually mine. (And darn you Kate Spade, for seeming to validate my inability to let a tempting deal on a lovely handbag pass me by.)

(Cyber) Monday Mishmosh

Happy Cyber Monday, e-friends!

I spent my Thanksgiving in Florida, where I'm from, chowing down on family classics and only occasionally billing a 15-hour day.  I scheduled my return flight home to occur the morning of Black Friday, thinking that this would prevent me from shopping.

HAHAHAHAHA WRONG.

(For those wondering about my budget, I got a pay bump a few months ago, and instead of putting the extra money towards my loans, as I should be, I've been shopping.  I know, I know.  Working on it in that vague but also inevitable way that I am working on losing five pounds.)

Hollywood Boulevard Skirt, $66 (Oh please somebody buy this and wear it to work, just for giggles.  This may be one outfit that a black blazer CANNOT make professional-looking.  But doesn't it just make you dream of glamour?)

Summer Break Skirt, $52 (I thought for a few minutes that this was just a chartreuse pencil skirt with no adornments and that the huge white flower in the picture was one of the greenhouse props.  WRONG.  That huge white flower is sewn right onto the skirt!  Ack, thank goodness for user reviews, otherwise I would have been in for a huge surprise when what I thought was a conservative pencil skirt arrived at my doorstep.  That said, the reviews for this skirt are glowing and PEOPLE LOVE THE FLOWER.  I am very skeptical, but oh so curious!)

OOTD: I need an intervention

Have you ever bought something that was just too perfect?

You know, the kind of clothing item that goes with everything, makes you feel great, is practical, is comfortable, is easy, and pretty much gives you an attitude orgasm every time you look at it?  Something so fantastic that it has essentially stunted your wardrobe because you can imagine no way to get dressed without said item?

Well, these shoes are that for me right now:

I just adore everything about them.  They are the perfect summer flat.  Work-appropriate, easy for biking, good summer color, and because they are only $17 full price (here) I will not feel badly if I shred them up while biking and need to buy several backup pairs.

I've been wearing them almost non-stop for a month and biking in them nearly every day, and they still look pretty good:



There are some minor scratches around the toe, which I attribute to the biking (when I stop at a light, I put my toe down on the road), but these are not noticeable from a normal height.

So, thank you Payless for making a splendid nude flat and selling it for a song.  This is the only pair of shoes for which I have ever contemplated buying a backup pair (and probably will).

As if retailers weren't already killing us with the plethora of sales at this time of year, I figured I'd add a bit of sale-tuational awareness to the mix.

Kate Spade Rose Club Melisse, $425 $291 $212



My beloved Kate Spade purse/clutch got a substantial price reduction this week!  (Reviewed here)  Now with several more weeks of wear, I can affirm that I love the bag.  One significant downside, though:  The enamel bow on the front of the bag can scratch.  Mine is showing several scratches of unknown origin.  It's only visible up-close, but if you know this is the type of thing that would bother you, then best to pass on the bag.


Kate Spade Dotted Magdalena Dress continues to pop back

The way these restaurant.com certificates work is that you have to spend a minimum of more than $25 (varies by restaurant, but for some places the minimum is as low as $35).  Each restaurant has its own conditions (some limit you to dinner only, dine-in only, etc.).  There are no expiration dates.  You tip on the total of the bill before the discount is applied.  I've used these before without a problem.

I stocked up on certificates for a few of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood, and bought a few more just to experiment with.  The total value of my coupons was $550 (the certificates themselves would have been nearly $300) and I paid $26.50 for everything.

If I were not a forgetful idiot, I would have visited Ebates before buying, and I would have gotten 30% cash back. But I didn't do that. Because I'm an idiot. But you are not, so sign up for Ebates (and don't forget to actually use it) and start earning that cash back.
