Those of you who have been with me for a while may have noticed a sudden lack of entries about a hobby that used to take up a lot of my time:
While I was never a particularly competitive runner, I liked to think of myself as a reasonably fit person who enjoyed a recreational jog here and there. I've run a few races over the years and have gotten faster over time. Running will always be inextricably tied to weight loss in my mind, but not in the obvious way. Although exercise certainly helped me drop inches, I will never forget the realization that, after 25 pounds of weight loss, I could run several minutes per mile faster than I used to. I felt in that moment that my body was a machine that I had streamlined, improved. I did something good for it, and it functioned better as a result.
At the finish line of a ten mile race, very close to goal weight. I ran this race almost 25 minutes faster than my previous best time.
Running was not only a great form of exercise, but it was also something I enjoyed. I liked being outside and passing through new surroundings. Sometimes I would run for peace -- through Riverside Park on a nice flat trail in the evening. Sometimes I ran down Fifth Avenue and stimulated myself with long vistas of store windows, dreaming of outfits and unlimited budgets.
I miss running, but the cold weather has completely sapped my motivation. Completely. I have not run in more than two months. I hate treadmills and I hate running on indoor tracks; the joy of the run for me is mainly about being outside and going somewhere. Winter kind of kills it for me.
Unfortunately, I no longer have an option. I am supposed to run a half marathon in little more than a month, and I must start re-building at least a base level of mileage if I want to finish this thing without an injury.
I need motivation to exercise in the winter.
Naturally, it's time for my very first blog giveaway!
Readers, I would like you to give me some motivation to exercise in the winter, and in return, I will give you some motivation to do the same. To commemorate my first AdSense paycheck (Thanks for clicking on the blog ads, everyone! Keep up the good work!), I'm offering a giveaway of one of my favorite fitness products: SWEATY BANDS! (warning: linked website plays loud music; mute your computer if you are at work)
Sweaty Bands seem like a natural item to give away here; often times, new fitness goodies motivate me to exercise even when it's cold out because I'm so excited to try out a new product (see, e.g., Vibram Five Fingers).
Sweaty Bands fit the bill. I absolutely love these things. Not only do they come in lots of cute colors and patterns, but they do not slip off your head in even the toughest of circumstances. Seriously. Witness:
After running 3.2 miles through the woods, crawling on my hands and knees through muddy water and under barbed wire, scaling fences, and jumping over fire at last year's Warrior Dash, the Sweaty Band is still perfectly in place!
I can't get enough of these, and as you can see I have quite a collection:
Enter this giveaway to receive an awesome Sweaty Band of your very own!
I have this pattern in the green color, and amazingly it goes well with ALL of my workout clothes.
This giveaway is small but mighty.
